Trump endorses Bolsonaro as Brazil’s Senate recommends charges
The endorsement was made Wednesday right around the time the Brazilian Senate recommended charges against Bolsonaro for his handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
“President Jair Bolsonaro and I have become great friends over the past few years,” Trump bragged in his statement regarding his relationship with the Brazilian president.
Trump also touted Bolsonaro’s work ethic and personality, saying he “fights hard for, and loves, the people of Brazil” and equating it to being similar to Trump’s love for “the people of the United States.”
“Brazil is lucky to have a man such as Jair Bolsonaro working for them. He is a great President and will never let the people of his great country down,” Trump continued.
The Brazilian Senate recommended in a 7-4 vote that Bolsonaro face criminal indictments, including for crimes against humanity, following a six-month investigation into his handling of the pandemic, according to the Associated Press. Bolsonaro has denied any wrongdoing.
Brazil is ranked third in the world with the number of cases and deaths related to COVID-19 after the U.S. and India, according to the Johns Hopkins University coronavirus tracker.
Brazil has reported 21,748,984 COVID-19 cases and 606,246 deaths related to the virus.
