Netflix confirms new Bird Box movie’s cast and plot details
Thanks to Variety, we know that award-winning stars Mario Casas (The Paramedic) and Georgina Campbell (Murdered by My Boyfriend) will play the lead characters here.
They’ll get support from Diego Calva, Alejandra Howard, Patrick Criado, Niala Schuberth, Leonardo Sbaraglia, Gonzalo de Castro, Michelle Jenner, Lola Dueñas and Celia Freijeiro.
The movie is directed by Àlex and David Pastor (2009’s post-apocalyptic thriller Carriers).
The frightening action is set in the same universe as the American flick, albeit across the Atlantic in Barcelona.
It follows Sebastian and his young daughter Anna as they join up with a group of survivors looking to find a safe haven. However, a new threat arises, which is set to be more dangerous than the deadly creatures they’re trying to get away from.
Meanwhile, back in 2018, Bird Box screenwriter Eric Heisserer explained why we’re never shown the monsters’ physical form, saying: “There was a time when one of the producers was like, ‘No, you have to see something at some point’ and forced me to write essentially a nightmare sequence where Malorie [Sandra Bullock] experiences one in that house.”
Bullock herself described the eventual creation as “snake-like” and reminiscent of a “long fat baby”.
Director Susanne Bier went on to recall: “It so easily becomes funny. We actually shot that and spent a lot of energy on it, but every time I saw it, I was like ‘This is not going to be tense, it’s just going to be funny’.
“At first, Sandy was like, ‘I don’t want to see it’ because she thought it was scary. Then it was like, ‘Don’t show it to me because [I’ll laugh].’ Every time I did it, I was like, ‘Shit, that’s a different film’.”
Bird Box is streaming on Netflix.
