Guardians of the Galaxy 3’s Will Poulter Talks Bulking Up to Play Adam Warlock


Will Poulter is already bulking up for his role as Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 — though he won’t confirm if he’ll be gold.

During an appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show, Poulter was asked about his imminent arrival to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In their talk, Ross opened up about his own appreciation for the character of Adam Warlock and recalled his excitement over previous teases for Warlock’s arrival dating back to 2017. However, when it became clear that Poulter wouldn’t be able to open up about plot of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Ross turned his attention to Warlock’s unique biology, saying, “Look at the guns on that boy now.”

Poulter confirmed that he has been putting in some effort to properly capture the physicality of being one of the most-powerful Marvel superheroes. When asked if he had been working out for the role, the actor said “I’ve been trying. Yeah, yeah.” However, his transformation isn’t complete, as the actor joked and pointed to Adam Warlock’s appearance on the cover of Marvel Premiere #1, saying “I’ve got a little bit of a ways to go, as you can see from that image.”

Though Poulter wouldn’t comment on whether or not Warlock would retain his signature golden skin tone from the comics, Ross was quick to point out that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 basically already confirmed it, when the golden-skinned Sovereign high priestess Ayesha pointed to a giant cocoon and said that the man inside was named Adam. Ross even joked “You’re going to come out as a big gold naked Warlock.”

This playful chat isn’t the first time that Poulter’s appearance has garnered attention from curious parties. When Poulter was announced for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, many moviegoers were swooning over Poulter’s glow-up, having not seen the actor since his roles as a teenager. Poulter, who seems to be humbled by all of the attention, is looking forward to filling out the role of Adam Warlock. Speaking on the experience of joining the MCU, he said “Everyone I’ve interacted with there is great and you know, [I’m] very excited to be part of a franchise like Guardians, which I regard to be like, one of the most creative and unique.”

Adam Warlock first appeared as “Him” in Fantastic Four #66 in 1967. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, he was made to be the perfect human being. The character would go on to make scattered appearances in various Marvel titles before taking on the name of Adam Warlock in 1972. Warlock proved to be popular with fans and the character continued to guest-star in cosmic titles, eventually gaining control of the Soul Gem and later, wielding the Infinity Gauntlet. He has been both friend and foe to the Guardians of the Galaxy, forever cursed by his connection to the Magus.

Currently, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is in the early stages of pre-production. Alongside Poulter, director James Gunn has teased that dozens of new roles have been cast for the film. However, With the movie currently slated for a May 5, 2023 release, it’ll likely be quite some time until fans get a glimpse of Poulter’s possibly-golden godly-physique.
